The addition and renovation to the existing Steele/Burnand Anza-Borrego Desert Research Center respectfully balanced the incorporation of the many unique and historically significant design components of architect William Kesling’s original design, within an updated context that maximizes sustainability and low maintenance. Deep overhangs, utilizing pipes in a post and beam structural support design, extend from each building’s exposed structural system to protect adjacent walkways and windows from direct sun exposure. Low-emissivity operable windows are grouped and where possible, located at building corners to maximize desert view opportunities and provide natural ventilation. Load bearing steel stud walls and exposed steel roof framing systems provide enhanced long term low maintenance support for stucco walls and gravel roof finishes selected to blend harmoniously with the existing building.
A pattern of outdoor spaces and overhead shading structures developed were developed to connect large and smaller spaces to enhance the living experience of residents and visitors.
